Over the years, we’ve been lucky enough to work alongside some of the very best in the industry – talented, professional, and all-round wonderful people who know our venue inside out. That’s why we created The Great Barn Supplier Spotlight: a series shining a light on some of our favourite suppliers, many of whom are familiar faces here at our venue. Every couple who books with us receives a full copy of our carefully curated list of recommended suppliers to help with their planning. But for now, here’s a little preview.
This time, we’re delighted to feature the lovely Nicole from Sweet Satisfaction Cake Design, an award-winning luxury cake designer whose creations are every bit as spectacular to look at as they are delicious to eat. Nicole has been part of many unforgettable Great Barn weddings over the years, and we’re thrilled to share more about her work and why she loves creating cakes for couples tying the knot here.
Tell us a little about who you are and what you offer…
I’m a home-loving girl who loves gardening, growing veg and flowers, and my business thrives on that personal touch. From that first meet up to the final set up of the cake – it must look professional and taste homemade with love and care.
How did you get started in the wedding industry?
Sheer luck! I worked as a pastry chef for 15 years and honed my skills in a busy pastry kitchen. But somehow my creative side had to be released and my wedding cakes have turned out to be the perfect vehicle to combine skill and art.
What makes a wedding at The Great Barn Devon so special from your point of view?
Without a doubt the amazing high-tech lights that John uses to create magic and drama. He uses them to showcase my cakes perfectly! John and Emma’s incredible attention to detail makes them a dream team, and of course the beautiful barn and grounds make such a memorable setting.
Do you have a favourite memory or moment from a wedding here at The Great Barn?
A recurring memory is of John enquiring about the flavours of each wedding cake – and the ensuing disappointment if there isn’t a chocolate tier! And of course playing the theme music from The Great British Bake Off when I am setting up a cake! I have been providing cakes for couples marrying at The Great Barn for 16 years and it’s still one of my favourite venues.
Are there any trends you’re loving at the moment?
I’m really enjoying retro trend at the moment. More than a trend, I feel it looks to an era of more traditional values and I enjoy doing the intricate piping detail on Lambeth style cakes.
What does a typical wedding day look like for you behind the scenes?
Beautiful! By the time I arrive with cake, everything is done and the cake is usually the last crowning focal point to complete the vision that couples have been dreaming about for so many months!
