One of the questions we’re most often asked by couples is for our recommendations on trusted wedding suppliers. Over the years, we’ve been lucky enough to work alongside some of the very best in the industry – talented, professional, and all-round wonderful people who know our venue inside out. That’s why we created The Great Barn Supplier Spotlight: a series shining a light on some of our favourite suppliers, many of whom are familiar faces here at our venue. Every couple who books with us receives a full copy of our carefully curated list of recommended suppliers to help with their planning. But for now, here’s a little preview.
This time, we’re delighted to feature Emma Hewlett Floral Design. With a background in theatre and events, Emma brings an eye for drama, beauty and storytelling to her floral work, transforming spaces with imaginative designs. Her team’s installations have graced countless weddings here at The Great Barn, always striking the perfect balance between luxury and a natural, organic feel.
Tell us a little about who you are and what you offer...
Emma Hewlett Floral Design is a full-scale event floristry and styling team bringing wedding flowers that are the epitome of untamed elegance. We specialise in natural, seasonal-inspired wedding flowers. Our signature style aligns with the seasons, drawing inspiration from each couple’s individual style whilst being led by their love story. Founded by Emma in 2010, the studio is renowned for delivering blooms where luxury collides with an undone, organic feel. We pride ourselves on being as sustainable as possible, using locally grown and British flowers to make each wedding truly unique.
How did you get started in the wedding industry?
With a background in theatre and events, Emma transferred her creative skills and trained in floristry over 20 years ago. After working alongside one of the UK’s most incredible florists, she went on to create her own wedding floristry business.
What makes a wedding at The Great Barn Devon so special from your point of view?
The immaculate attention to detail from John, Emma and their team. It really is second to none.
Do you have a favourite memory or moment from a wedding here at The Great Barn?
John allowing us to create a hanging floral installation – such a memorable highlight.
What advice would you give couples planning their wedding?
Follow your heart, not trends.
Having said that, are there any trends you’re loving at the moment?
I’m really enjoying the flower-heavy look at the moment. Lots of British blooms together look absolutely divine.
What does a typical wedding day look like for you behind the scenes?
Normally it starts with a very early wake-up after a sleepless night (yes, I still worry about things even after 20 years!), breakfast on the go and straight to the studio to load the van. Once we arrive at the venue, it’s full steam ahead to get everything styled before the ceremony. We usually drop off the bridal party flowers first and then move on to the ceremony set up. Floral arches and pillars are styled on the day, which takes a couple of hours. If it’s a full wedding, the team splits – some working on the ceremony, others on the reception – and I move between the two to make sure all my design ideas are being met. Once everything is set up, we take photos to share on social media before heading back to the studio to unload and tidy up. The final job is to compost the green waste before grabbing a smoothie on the way home!
Where else can people see your work or get in touch?
The best place is Instagram. We’re also on Facebook, and while we do have Twitter and TikTok accounts, we don’t update those as often!
A huge thank you to Emma Hewlett and her team for sharing their story and for bringing such beauty to so many wonderful weddings here at The Great Barn. We can’t wait to welcome you back to the venue very soon!
