Flowers really do have a marvellous way of transforming a wedding space, and here at The Great Barn, they sit beautifully alongside the character of the historic building. We spoke to our neighbours, Deer Leap Flowers, about their approach to floristry and what goes on behind the scenes when they flower a wedding.

Tell us a little bit about yourselves...

We are a family run flower farm, located less than a mile from The Great Barn. We grow traditional English flowers in tune with the seasons, creating natural, romantic arrangements that reflect the beauty of the flowers we grow. We love welcoming couples to the farm, giving them the opportunity to see where and how their wedding flowers are grown.

How did you get started in the wedding industry?

From a young age, I’ve always been drawn to colour, texture and the beauty of the natural world, so growing and arranging flowers feels like a natural extension of that creativity. Growing flowers in a sustainable and ethical way is also very important to us. We became aware of the growing demand for locally grown, seasonal flowers and began selling our flowers locally. This gradually led to providing DIY buckets for couples who wanted to arrange their own wedding flowers, and from there we began receiving requests to create and supply wedding flowers ourselves.

What makes a wedding at The Great Barn Devon so special?

The Great Barn is in a beautiful location, just a short distance from the A38 but in the heart of a traditional Devon village. The Great Barn itself is a beautiful historical building with its atmosphere and stunning lighting providing the perfect backdrop for our naturalistic flowers.

Do you have a favourite memory or moment from a wedding here?

One of the most memorable weddings we have flowered recently featured an abundance of candles. The soft candlelight, combined with the flowers and beautiful surroundings of the Great Barn, created such a magical atmosphere.

Any advice would you give couples planning their wedding?

Our advice would be to enjoy the planning process and make choices that feel right for you as a couple. When it comes to flowers, we love couples to be involved as much or as little as they wish. We take great care to finalise all the details well before the wedding and work closely with The Great Barn to ensure everything runs smoothly, allowing couples to relax and enjoy their day.

Are there any trends you’re loving at the moment?

We are loving all the personal touches that couples include. Anything homemade seems to provide a talking point that brings guests together.

What does a typical wedding day look like for you behind the scenes?

Our wedding mornings usually begin early, with the final preparations and arranging of flowers at the venue. We work closely with John and Emma, who are such experienced and thoughtful hosts. Their meticulous attention to detail helps everything run smoothly, creating a calm, happy and relaxed atmosphere for everyone involved.

Where else can people see your work or get in touch?
