On a gorgeously golden summer’s day in 2024, Molly and Ole celebrated their wedding here at The Great Barn Devon in a style that was effortlessly elegant.. With a minimalist, black-and-white palette, chic details, and breathtaking floral arrangements, their day was a beautiful blend of contemporary style and old-school glamour. One of the sweetest highlights? Their beautiful young daughter, who stole hearts as the most adorable flower girl. We’re so grateful to Molly and Ole for allowing us to share a glimpse into their stunning celebration.
Tell us a little bit about your wedding day…
Our day was on a beautifully warm, summers day in August of 2024. The gardens looked stunning, the flowers were so bright and colourful making the venue idyllic. My husband and I spent the Friday evening in Place, along with my bridesmaids and his groomsmen. We had a ‘charcuterie board’ style dinner along with some of our favourite drinks and songs in the garden.
Saturday morning, I got ready in the bridal suite with my girls. It was a very chilled morning; we had my favourite songs playing in the background and started on the mimosas right away. My Maid of Honour made these beautiful frozen orange juice roses that melted into prosecco. The perfect way to calm my nerves! Ole was with his groomsmen in the lounge, starting on the beers nice and early.
Our guests started arriving around 12 and were greeted by a wonderful Saxophonist and glasses of fizz in the gardens. Our ceremony began at 1pm inside the Great Barn. We had storm lanterns lining the aisle and small bunches of gypsophila at the end of each chair row. After the scary “I do’s”, and classic confetti walk, we gathered in the gardens for lawn games, more fizz, photos and had a local guitar player for some background music.
After the delicious canapés, we headed inside for our wedding feast at 4pm. We entered to Jamiroquai – Space Cowboy and went straight into cutting our cake. We had small shot bottles of Tequila Rose at each place, along with a personalised message to each guest from my husband and I – a touch that everyone said they loved. After the most incredible food we headed back out into the courtyard where the fit pit was lit. We had our cake served with tea and coffee in the garden before it was time to head back in for our first dance. We had the one and only Greatest Day by Take That, a feel-good song that got everyone dancing. After a small DJ set from Ole’s brother, we had The Boogie Knights come and play. We had disco balls dotted around the place, flashing glow sticks and a sign to say, ‘Welcome to the Disco’. The bar opened and our guests started filling the dancefloor.
In the interval of the band I changed into my evening dress, a glitzy white dress covered in feathers and sparkles. The big dress was finally off and I was able to really dance. We chose pies for our evening food which went down a treat. The perfect carb filled treat at the end of the day which everyone needed. Our day sadly had to end at some point, so guests started departing around 11:30pm and the guests of ours staying in the accommodation headed back to Place for some final songs and drinks.
It was the most amazing, special day filled with love, happiness and fantastic food. I wish I could do it all over again!
Why did you choose The Great Barn?
Upon arrival at The Great Barn, we knew it was the place for us. The gorgeous wooden door to the barn is show stopping and the surrounding gardens and tall trees made it feel as if we were abroad. Location was also great with the majority of our family and guests living locally. We loved the fact that people could stay the evening and make it more of a weekend event rather than just a day celebration. Emma and John made us feel so welcome from our first visit and allowed us to explore the venue as much as we wanted. It was only the second venue we had looked at but we both felt it was special.
How did you bring your vision to life? Tell us about the styling, colours or any special touches.
We never really had much of a plan in terms of styling. The venue was beautiful enough and didn’t feel it needed much. We kept with the rustic feel of the barn and left styling very minimalistic. We had simple yet beautiful table decorations and locally grown flowers dotted around the place.
Our flowers were from a local flower farm called Peamore Flora, but we made all the bouquets and button wholes ourselves. I was able to go to the farm and browse their flowers and order all the ones I wanted for the bouquets; we then made them up 2 days before the wedding. It was such a special and personal thing to do but was also considerably cheaper. For the bunches we had dotted around, these were from a tiny flower stall in Kenton, I think we paid £10 for these, and they were beautiful.
Tell us about the outfits — what did you both wear, and how did you feel on the day?
I wore a Maggie Sottero dress called the Paxton; an A-line design with a long flowing train and buttons the whole length of the back. My favourite part about it was that it had pockets – I felt so chic! My veil was long with tiny crystals embellished all over and amazingly was only £30 from a wedding dress shop that was closing. My husband wore an all-black fitted suit with a crisp white shirt and bow tie. My shoes were white satin with a glittered block heel, perfect for our disco themed evening entertainment. Jewellery I kept very minimal with just a drop pearl earring I found on Etsy and a single silver bracelet with a light blue charm to represent my ‘something blue’.
I had my make up done by a friend who was a MUA for Charlotte Tilbury. I went for a light glam with subtle browns/ golds on my eyes. My lipstick colour was Dancefloor Princess by Charlotte Tilbury was the perfect rosy peach colour for the day. For my hair, I found the most wonderful hair stylist called Codie Symons who is based in Plymouth. She was so talented and managed to do mine plus my 6 bridesmaids’ hair with no trouble or stress at all. I went for a centre parting with slick sides and a loose curl through the back of my hair, it unbelievably stayed in place all day!
What food and drink did you serve to your guests, and what inspired your choices?
Ole and I love Prosecco so this was a must for our day, guests were welcomed with one on arrival. We offered our guests Prosecco and Beer throughout the day and a mix of Pinot Grigio or Malbec for the wedding breakfast. We had a small shot of Tequila Rose for each guest at their seat in small glass bottles with a cork lid.
The food was one of the best parts of our day and we had countless compliments on it, many guests stating it was ‘the best wedding food they’d ever had’. We went for the Seabass and Green Bean salad for starter along with the Mediterranean Veggie Tart. We knew that The Great Barn were known for the sharing boards, so we decided on The Sticky Shoulder of Lamb with Cornish New Season Potatoes and a mixture of salads, along with the Butternut Wellington for our veggie guests. There was so much food, nobody was complaining that they were hungry! The serviced was brilliant and every guest was catered for. For dessert we served our wedding cake with tea & coffee in the rose gardens. A 3-tier cake made up of strawberry shortcake and zesty lemon and raspberry meringue. We found Boho Cakes through Instagram, a local cake maker from Totnes, and we were blown away with the designs and flavours. We chose a semi naked cake with edible flowers surrounding the tiers, it was the perfect end to our meal.
What was your favourite part of your wedding day?
Gosh this is such a hard question as it was all so fun and exactly what we envisioned. I think the moment I really treasured was our first dance as the song meant so much to us and our friends and family were so happy for us. It was a perfect start to the evening and its not often you have everybody you love dancing with you to your favourite song. I did also love getting ready with my lifelong friends and daughter in the morning. It’s a morning of pure happiness, excitement and love.
Looking back, what advice would you give to others who are planning their wedding?
ENJOY THE PROCESS. It can be a very hard and stressful time planning a wedding as it can feel very overwhelming however, we just tried to enjoy the planning of a once in a lifetime party for your closest and most special friends. Try not to overthink anything and decide on moments that are going to be special to you as a couple. One of my biggest concerns was the weather but I soon learnt that its an element you can’t control and realised that your day will be incredible regardless, so just enjoy it!
