A Wedding Venue with a Swimming Pool… and a whole weekend to enjoy it!

One of the lovely things about a three-day wedding weekend is that there’s time to a lot, or to do very little at all, depending on your preference!

Guests arrive on Friday, bags are unpacked, somebody opens a bottle, children disappear to explore the gardens and, in the warmer months, you’ll usually find someone asking, “Who’s brought their swimming costume?”

As you can imagine, our heated outdoor pool has been particularly well used during this summer’s heatwave. There have been leisurely swims before dinner, children spending hours in the water while everyone else catches up nearby, and plenty of Sunday morning dips before the journey home. It’s one of those parts of our idyllic country estate venue that quietly becomes part of the weekend.

A question we’re often asked is whether the pool is available on the wedding day itself. The answer is no, and that’s quite deliberate.

We close the pool for the day of the wedding not just for everyone’s safety, but so that everyone’s attention stays where it should be. There are enough wonderful distractions already without wondering whether somebody’s disappeared off for a swim just before the speeches!

Instead, the pool is there to be enjoyed either side of the celebrations. It becomes somewhere to gather on Friday afternoon as guests arrive, or to slow things down again on Sunday before saying goodbye.

It’s a small detail, but one that reflects the way weddings tend to unfold here. Because The Great Barn isn’t simply a venue for the ceremony and reception. It’s a place where up to 30 of your closest family and friends stay together for the weekend. (In addition to our onsite accommodation, there is plenty of beautiful accommodation just a stone’s throw from the venue for more guests, should it be required. We always share our list of tried-and-trusted recommended accommodation with couples that book with us.) There are long breakfasts, walks around the estate, evenings around the fire pit, coffee in the courtyard, games on the lawn and, if the Devon weather plays nicely, a few hours spent beside the pool too.

Not every couple uses it, some barely glance in its direction, and others tell us afterwards that it was one of those unexpected parts of the weekend that everyone ended up talking about.

If you’re looking for a wedding venue with a swimming pool in Devon, we’d love to show you around. It may not be the reason you choose The Great Barn, but it’s often one of those little extras that helps make a wedding weekend feel exactly that little bit more relaxed.
